East Northport, NY - On Saturday, May 24, 2008, the first annual Cpl. Christopher G. Scherer "I Did the Grid" four mile Run/Walk and Fun Run will be taking place on the streets of East Northport.

Christopher Scherer who was a Corporal in the Marine Corps lost his life while serving our Country in Iraq. He was born and raised in East Northport and grew up playing in the neighborhood that he fondly referred to as 'the grid'. According to the Wikepedia definition, a grid is a "city plan in which streets run at right angles to form a 'grid' of city blocks". Dictionaries define the grid as "a network of uniformly placed horizontal and vertical lines for locating points by means of coordinates".

Whatever the definition, these neighborhood blocks were indeed Chris' domain and more than once, Chris was considered by his peers to be the focal point or as stated in the definition, the "coordinate" in planning some of the many activities and adventures he experienced while growing up in his neighborhood.

On May 24th, participants of all ages can experience four miles of the [grid] streets of East Northport while jogging or walking from the starting and ending location at Pulaski Road School.

Quality t-shirts will be given to all pre-registered race participants (postmarked or online by 5/12/08). T-shirts can be picked up at registration. Cost for the four mile run: Adults $20; K-5th $15; Active Armed Service Members Free. The Fun Run (no t-shirts) registration fee is: Adults $10 and K-5th $5. There will be a $5.00 per person fee after 5/12/08 for all late registrants for the run. We will do a second printing for late registrations and the t-shirts can be picked up on 6/14/08. There are no late fees for the fun run.

This fundraising event is supporting several projects such as the Cpl. Christopher G. Scherer Scholarship Fund. This scholarship fund will award three scholarships each year to Northport High School seniors. One member of varsity boy's lacrosse, one member of varsity girl's lacrosse and one member of the graduating class will be eligible for the award. The "Leave No Marine Behind Project" supports our troops in Iraq or Afghanistan. Monies raised buys socks, underwear, and other supplies requested by Chris' fellow Marines of the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, in addition to individual Marines in recognition of their service to our County.
